Then locate the thresholds humans have imposed to simplify communication. Compare a large movement that stays inside one category with a tiny movement that crosses a border. If the border crossing receives more attention despite less underlying change, the labels are driving judgement. Tyson illustrates this with hurricane categories: movement from low category three to high category three may be substantial, yet a one-mile-per-hour increase into category four becomes breaking news. The model does not require abolishing categories. It keeps them as tools while grounding decisions in the continuous evidence they summarize.
