Create Before You Consume is a sequencing rule for attention. Instead of opening the day with feeds, messages, or other people's content, complete a meaningful piece of original work first. The mechanism is state protection: external content can move the brain into comparison and reaction, making it harder to hear an independent voice. Creation, by contrast, establishes momentum through doing and ensures that the day's priority receives attention before lower-value inputs compete for it. The output need not be finished; a draft, sketch, outline, or recorded idea is enough to preserve the creative lead. Consumption can follow, but it becomes intentional input rather than the default opening behaviour.

Origin

The host calls scrolling before creating one of her biggest anti-habits and gives the direct rule to create before consuming.

Core principles

  • 01Early inputs shape creative attention
  • 02Other people's content can trigger comparison
  • 03Creation builds momentum
  • 04Your own voice deserves the first attention block

How to run it

  1. 1

    Define the first creation

Choose one concrete artifact to begin before opening external content. Make the target small enough to start immediately.

Pro tip Decide the artifact the night before so the morning contains no negotiation.

Watch out A vague goal such as 'be creative' is too easy to displace.

  2. 2

    Protect the input boundary

Keep feeds, news, videos, and nonessential messages closed while you create. Remove shortcuts or notifications that pull attention into reaction mode.

Pro tip Use a separate writing window or device mode with feeds unavailable.

Watch out Checking for one minute can still set the comparison frame for the session.

  3. 3

    Create, then consume

Produce the draft or artifact first, then choose what external material is useful. Let consumption serve a defined purpose after momentum already exists.

Pro tip Mark the creative block complete before opening the first feed.

In the wild

Draft before opening social media

A writer normally starts the morning reading industry posts and then struggles to find an original angle. They instead draft 300 words from their own notes before opening any feed. Later reading becomes research for revision rather than the source of the initial voice.

The writer completes a daily original draft before comparison and reactive browsing can take over.

Common mistakes

Treating inbox checks as harmless

Reactive messages can shift attention away from creation even when they are not social media.

Requiring a finished product

The rule requires creation before consumption, not completing an entire polished work in one sitting.

Is it for you?

Best for

Creators and knowledge workers whose best work is easily crowded out by feeds, messages, or other people's ideas.

Not ideal for

Roles where reviewing urgent external information is required before safe or accurate action.
