The Plateau Diagnostic Ladder checks likely causes in sequence before declaring that a program has stopped working. First, verify that the plan contains structure, specificity, and an intentional way to add weight, repetitions, range, or another overload variable. Next, look for distracting activities that consume energy needed for the target adaptation. Then audit the major recovery resources: calories, protein, sleep, and down-regulation. Consistency and genuine effort also matter; intermittent hard weeks do not create reliable progression. Only after those factors pass should time become the explanation. Advanced athletes improve in increments too small to notice over a few weeks, so what feels like a plateau may be a normal adaptation timescale. The ladder prevents random program changes that restart the same cycle.
