Consumer wearables can substantially overestimate calories burned, so their absolute energy-expenditure number should not drive food intake. The useful signal is precision: if the same device measures the same person under similar conditions, a higher reading may indicate that one session demanded more energy than another even though neither reading is literally correct. Establish a personal baseline for a repeatable workout, then compare later readings with that baseline rather than treating the displayed calories as earned food. This converts a weak measuring instrument into a trend detector. The output is a directional judgement about relative effort, not a calorie budget.
