The Systemic Megathreat Matrix treats the environment as a network rather than a list of separate risks. Start by identifying major threats across economic, financial, social, political, geopolitical, environmental, health, technology, trade, and globalization domains. Then examine each threat against every other threat, recording whether it increases, reduces, or reshapes the second risk. This exposes reinforcing loops, bottlenecks, and second-order effects that a specialist view can miss. The output is not a single forecast; it is a structured picture of how shocks can propagate through the whole system. Teams can use the strongest links to form scenarios, choose leading indicators, and prioritize defenses against combinations of events rather than preparing for one threat at a time.
Origin
Roubini developed the approach while broadening his work beyond economics and finance. During COVID, reduced travel gave him time to study how ten economic and non-economic megathreats connect as a system.

Define the system
Set the decision horizon and the organization, market, or society whose risks you are assessing. Keep the boundary explicit so the map remains usable.

Inventory threats
List material threats across economic, financial, social, political, geopolitical, environmental, health, technological, trade, and globalization domains.

Build the matrix
Place the threats on both axes. For every pair, record how the first threat could increase, reduce, or transform the second.

Find reinforcing loops
Highlight clusters where several threats feed one another. Rank them by plausible impact and the speed at which they could propagate.

Construct scenarios around the strongest interactions and define indicators that would show each scenario is emerging. Assign defensive actions to the combinations that matter most.

It monitors energy prices and lending spreads together, secures a secondary supplier, and delays nonessential debt-funded expansion.

Treating the matrix as a forecast
The map identifies plausible interactions, not a guaranteed sequence of events. Use it to prepare options and indicators rather than claim certainty.
Mapping only familiar domains
Restricting the exercise to your specialty recreates the blind spot the matrix is meant to remove.
