Harder-Than-Reality Training begins with a demand map of the real event. Identify the terrain, duration, movement, equipment, environment, and decision pressures, then separate variables you can train from those you cannot reproduce safely. Build drills that make one controllable demand slightly harder than its real counterpart, such as gaining more vertical height on a steeper indoor route. The purpose is not indiscriminate suffering. It is to arrive with surplus capacity for the known task so attention and energy remain available for unfamiliar food, weather, altitude, exposure, and other uncontrolled conditions. Each drill should have a clear transfer argument and a safety boundary; otherwise extra difficulty becomes fatigue rather than preparation.

In the wild
Drummond studied the steep 3,700-foot Lhotse Face and trained by accumulating roughly 4,000 vertical feet on easy indoor climbing routes. Going straight up created a harder angle in a controlled setting, building fitness before she faced altitude, weather, food, and exposure outdoors.
